Rachel Collins, Compass Point Bible Church: Supporting Mental Health
By Julie-Marie Innes, Communication Volunteer | January 19th
Not everyone can access the mental health support that they desperately need. This is a reality close to the heart of Rachel Collins who has walked in Coldest Night of the Year every February, since 2018.
Raising awareness and funds for Eagles Nest and its work has taken on a special meaning for her.
"I have a family member that struggles with mental health and I know how important getting help is. It's scarce and unless you have a lot of money for a psychiatrist or therapist, you don't have a lot of options," she shares.
Together, with 10 or 12 members of her Compass Point Bible Church community, Rachel has proudly walked in the event which raises important funds for mental health counselling and coaching in Waterdown.
"I enjoy the evening walk," she says. "It's just a lot of fun and everyone feels like they are there to do something positive. Everyone is in a good mood. And 5K is not hard."
Rest stops along the way like, Tea at the White House and Jitterbug Café add to the evening walk by providing warm drinks and scones.
"Everyone is so happy and in good spirits, that's the best part," Rachel adds. “Get your friends to come with you. You're doing something that supports an organization that you know is helping others in Waterdown."
