Richard Bellsmith, Waterdown Fire Department: Meet Your Neighbours
By Julie-Marie Innes, Communication Volunteer | January 19th
When the Waterdown Firefighters take to the streets for the 5km walk at Coldest Night of the Year, you can't miss them.
The group of about 15 are usually decked out in their full bunker gear and wear the Coldest Night of the Year toques to show their team spirit for the event. It's no surprise that many drivers passing by honk their horns in a show of support.
"It feels amazing and it's a nice sense of community and a good sense of accomplishment," says Richard Bellsmith who is the Waterdown Department's Captain.
This February will be the 4th year the firefighters have been involved and together, with family and friends supporting them, they raised $2000 last year for Eagles Nest.
"They provide great services," adds Richard. "The event is so well run."
He and his team will be in the procession this February 24th and he encourages others to join in on the fun. "If you can help, you should. It's good exercise for a very good cause and you get out and meet your neighbours."
