Jolaine Montgomery, Flamborough Baptist Church: Walking for a Purpose

By Julie-Marie Innes, Communication Volunteer  |  January 19th

Jolaine Montgomery of Waterdown believes in leading by example and when it comes to her participation in Coldest Night of the Year, there are two very important reasons why she gets involved - her two daughters, ages 11 and 14, absolutely love the event.

“They're the ones saying, 'When are we doing it, when are we doing it Mom?'” says Montgomery.

The annual 2km or 5km walk in downtown Waterdown marks its 7th anniversary in 2024. The Montgomery family, including Jolaine's husband Andy and their church community from Flamborough Baptist, have walked every year.

"We're teaching our children how to give back and I love to encourage others to get out there and make a difference in the community," she adds.

“I like helping Eagles Nest and the great work that they do in the community helping others, especially after COVID when everybody's mental health was struggling."

And what about those colourful toques that all the walkers wear for the event? The Montgomery girls can't wait for this year's toque design.

"They wear them all the time, those are their favourites."

One other favourite memory is the act of walking in the beautiful community of Waterdown. "My daughter calls it 'walking for a purpose'. I agree, it's just a wonderful, fun night."

The Montgomery family and 18 members of Flamborough Baptist Church raised $2,000 in 2023. This February they'll be getting a team together once again.
